The snook stamp costs $10 for an annual permit at Go Outdoors Florida and is only required to harvest — catch-and-release needs just the license or a valid exemption. Florida residents fishing from shore qualify for the free shore-based saltwater license; the permit still applies if a fish goes in the cooler.

Why do the dates change south of Venice?
The Sarasota Bay region runs from State Road 64 in Bradenton to 27°04.727’ N near the Venice airport. Cross that line — roughly the Venice jetties south — and you are in the Charlotte Harbor region, closed through September 30. An angler at Big Pass can keep a slot fish September 1; an angler at Stump Pass or Boca Grande waits until October 1.
The split follows the 2013–2026 stock data: the Charlotte Harbor and Southwest stocks took the worst of the 2010 freeze and the 2017–19 red tides, so FWC holds their fall opener back a month to cover more of the spawn. Three practical consequences:
- The line is latitude, not landmarks. 27°04.727’ N crosses the ICW just south of the Venice airport. South of it, September snook go back.
- The fish’s location controls, not the ramp. Launch in Sarasota, run south past the line, and you fish Charlotte Harbor rules.
- North of SR 64 is Tampa Bay region — same dates as Sarasota Bay in 2026, but managed separately, so future orders can split them.
What are the closed-season rules (May 1 – August 31)?
Snook fishing stays legal all summer — harvest does not. May through August is catch-and-release only in every Gulf region, timed to the summer spawn when fish stack in the passes on new and full moons. The rules that still apply:
- Hook and line only; snatch-hooking is illegal year-round.
- No possession, period — a dead snook in the box during the closure is a citation regardless of size.
- Targeting them is fine: the summer beach and pass fishery from Siesta Key to Casey Key is the best sight-casting of the year.

The closure months are prime months — treat them as a release fishery and gear up so fights end fast:
